A rare site in modern Florida. It is said that once these birds were more common in Florida than vultures. However, they do not do well in urbanized environments and need large tracts of prairie to survive. They can still be found in the most rural parts of interior central Florida. Good places to see them include Myakka State Park and Dinner Island WMA.

Bandon Beach
This photo was taken after a dull, rainy, cloudy day on the coast in Bandon, Oregon. At the last minute, as the sun set, the clouds broke for a moment and the sky was illuminated with twilight colors.

Dreaming of Kauai
This photograph was taken standing in the clouds thousands of feet above the Kalalau Valley from atop the northwestern coast of Kauai. This flash of color only existed for seconds before the mountain top was once again shrouded in fog.

We flew into San Fran, rented a car and were off. Well, that is after my backpack finally arrived from the black hole of international travel known as MIA. Shortly after, we headed south down Highway 1. If this is a drive you've never taken, you should. The dramatic views of the rugged Pacific coastline make it one of the most scenic drives imaginable. However, if you are driving you'll have to use the turnoffs to really take in the scene, or face the distinct possibility of either sideswiping the mountain or plunging into the ocean as the road is an obstacle course of tight lanes and hair pin turns. Our first stop was Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. Pfeiffer Big Sur is a state park that protects some of the best specimens of redwood trees in the southern portion of their range. Worth a stop if you're looking to see some big trees but I wouldn't recommend it for camping unless you don't mind big crowds. That evening we headed south to check out Mc Way Falls which is in Julia Pfeiffer State Park (pictured here) and arrived just in time for a rare fog-free sunset.
The next day we headed north to Monterey. We booked a whale watching tour http://www.gowhales.com/) in hopes of catching a host of species that we don't see on the east coast. The rich fishing grounds of the Pacific provide habitat for a number of marine mammals. On the way out of the harbor we passed several sea lions (pictured here) basking on virtually any surface that would float.
We drove east through the valley and up into the Sierras to spend four days in the backcountry of Kings Canyon National Park. Stunning. I have to say that the Bubbs Creek trail is one the most scenic and enjoyable hikes I have ever done. Miles two and three are pretty unenjoyable switchbacks through blazing hot manzanita chaparral, but after that the rest of the trail is a relatively gentle climb into the high Sierras. Worth every mile. Wildflowers lined the trail which was abundant with wildlife. We saw two bears, countless birds, several deer, and many other smaller creatures.
On the way back to San Fran, we made a brief stop at Yosemite. Despite the impending fourth of July weekend, we had Glacier Point mostly to ourselves. We were treated to a beautiful view as the last bit of light reflected from the tallest peaks surrounding Yosemite Valley. From this view, you can hardly tell that the Valley is a tourist feeding frenzy where every last bit of wildness is consumed by midday.

After a brutal 9 hour hike (up and down two 15,000+ft passes, we finally made it to Lake Carhuacocha. Exhausted, I drug myself out of the warmth of my tent out into the freezing predawn temps eager to catch the early morning light on the majestic granite towers. From Peruvian Highlands
