  • A rare site in modern Florida. It is said that once these birds were more common in Florida than vultures. However, they do not do well in urbanized environments and need large tracts of prairie to survive. They can still be found in the most rural parts of interior central Florida. Good places to see them include Myakka State Park and Dinner Island WMA.

  • ''Fanning the Flames." This image was created at night using a long lens (420mm) and a long exposure (1sec.) to capture a palmetto being consumed by flames. Fire is an essential ecological process in most pine woods, and especially here in Florida. I wanted to get an intimate macro style shot of a little explored, but fundamentally essential environmental driver at work as it "grazed" through the flat woods--returning the plant material back into its fundamental elements so they can renew and fertilize the new growth to come.
